The Zizhi Tongjian (資治通鑒; literally "Comprehensive Mirror to Aid in Government") was a pioneering reference work in Chinese historiography, published in 1084, under the form of a chronicles. In 1065 CE, Emperor Yingzong of Song ordered the great historian Sima Guang (1019-1086) to lead with other scholars such as his chief assistants Liu Shu, Liu Ban and Fan Zuyu, the compilation of a universal history of China. The task took 19 years to be completed, and, in 1084, it was presented to his successor Emperor Shenzong of Song. The Zizhi Tongjian expose Chinese history from -403 BCE to 959 CE, contains 294 volumes (巻), and about 3 million Chinese characters.

《資治通鑒》是中國古代著名歷史學家、政治家司馬光和他的助手劉攽、劉恕、范祖禹、司馬康等人歷時十九年編纂的一部規模空前的編年體通史巨著，在中國史書中有極重要的地位。宋神宗認為該書“鑒於往事,有資於治道”,而欽賜《資治通鑒》此書名。
《資治通鑒》全書294卷，約300多萬字，另有《考異》、《目錄》各三十卷。《資治通鑒》所記歷史斷限，上起周威烈王二十三年（前403年），下迄後周顯德六年（959年），計跨16個朝代，共1363年的逐年記載詳細歷史。全書按朝代分為十六紀，即《周紀》五卷、《秦紀》三卷、《漢紀》六十卷、《魏紀》十卷、《晉紀》四十卷、《宋紀》十六卷、《齊紀》十卷、《梁紀》二十二卷、《陳紀》十卷、《隋紀》八卷、《唐紀》八十一卷、《後樑紀》六卷、《後唐紀》八卷、《後晉紀》六卷、《後漢紀》四卷、《後周紀》五卷。
